Chemical vs natural skincare - which is best?

For skincare lovers across the board, an oft shared goal is to have a youthful, glowing complexion. But how does one get there? With jargon such as hyaluronic acid, ceramides, and retinol rearing their heads on product labels and marketing campaigns, it can be difficult to know which ingredients to seek out, and which to avoid.

If you’re a skincare brand who is just starting out, no doubt you’re researching whether to launch a natural skincare line or collection of chemical-based products. To help you make the right decision, we’re going to take a closer look at the issue.

Which is better?

The answer to this question isn’t exactly straightforward. Natural skincare, of course, has many perks. It means the ingredients are derived from nature, and so they’re often more gentle on the skin. Since they also negate the need for the manufacturing of synthetic ingredients, manufacturing natural products has less of an environmental impact.

On the other hand, chemical products are highly effective, often more so than natural products. They contain active ingredients that have been extensively researched, and used by product developers because  they’ve been proven to deliver results. Another perk is that they’re often cheaper as they don’t contain pricey natural ingredients.

Which is right for you brand?

Whether you opt for natural or chemical ingredients depends on a variety of factors. Here are some factors to consider:

  • Budget: Natural ingredients tend to be more expensive than their chemical counterparts. Therefore, you’ll want to take into account your budget when you’re making a decision. Can you afford to go natural? Or is it better for your bottom line that you stick with chemical ingredients?
  • Target market: Another important thing to consider is what would appeal to your target market. For instance, are you looking to appeal to eco-conscious consumers? If you’re ideal buyer is someone that tends to make purchase decisions based on the green credentials of a brand, then it’s definitely worth using natural ingredients.
  • Pricing: As natural ingredients are more expensive, you’ll have to charge more for your products. Again, this means assessing your ideal customer, and deciding whether or not they’re likely to pay more for a natural product. If the answer’s yes, then natural might just be the right choice for you.
